Best Religion Tumblrs: 10 Must-Follow Tumblrs On Religion And Spirituality

According to the Huffington Post at least. Several of them are also listed via Tumblr’s spotlight, which would be great if they added to and/or rotated out. There’s no staff or community editor for the subject of religion though, and it would need to be someone with some comparative and experiential knowledge, so I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Your thoughts? Which Tumblrs pertaining to religion and spirituality do you recommend?

What I find is that neither the quality or quantity are consistent with many Tumblrs I follow and they don’t always stay “on point” so it’s hard to say definitely, add this one. For the record, I’m not fond of superlatives or awards and their exclusive nature, I just wish it were easier to know what’s out there.

A couple new ones I appreciate (see also > old recs), though I really can’t be bothered with registering for an account at HP so as to comment there:

  • The Conscious Muslim
  • Ty on blog (if he sticks around)

Bonus > Tumblrs that have (keyword: a lot) of iconography and sacred architecture that may be of interest to students of religion:

  • SÖM
  • Tehôm
  • Red Sulfur

Adding to the Spirituality Spotlight

Other than metadata or tags, likes and reblogs (the latter two of which can become very provincial after a while) I’m a bit disillusioned with the tools available to find each other here. I asked for a “Religion & Spirituality” category, which could include atheist and humanist blogs as well, for a long time. Must admit, though they finally obliged, I’ve been unimpressed with the anemic showing on the page.

Since they ask, can we offer some valuable additions? If you reblog, please do so as a link so that responses are provided all in one place. Many thanks.

Replying to my email from June 2011:

Tumblr staff person, Nov-10 10:58 (EST):

Hey Katherine,

I hope by now you’ve found our Spirituality Spotlight page!

http://www.tumblr.com/spotlight/spirituality

We appreciate your suggestion, and welcome any suggestions for blogs you believe would be good candidates for this page. We would love to see it expand.

Thanks!

I have a penchant for “original” curations, more text than not (or else really amazing photos), and hearing the actual voice of the person curating/seeking. This is not meant to be exhaustive, and it’s certainly not representative of as much religious diversity as I know is out there. But here are a few I like:

  • Being Blog (already there!)
  • Parabola Magazine
  • Rubin Museum of Art
  • Dhamma Everywhere (Sayadaw U Tejaniya)
  • The Conscious Muslim
  • Ίχνος
  • a:musing self
  • Ty on blog
  • Tending the Ox
  • Hollobone
  • Fear and Trembling
  • Breaking Night
  • Finding Real Words
  • It’s Not What You Think
  • Zen Circles
  • A Beginner’s Mind
  • Life Love Yoga
  • Dhamma Novice
  • within&beyond
  • Red Viena
  • Gravity Seeds
  • shaman sun
  • years ago in the deserts of turkistan…
  • e x q u i s i t e ∞ p a r a d o x
  • Garden of the Far East
  • Radio Solitude
  • The Mind Is Its Own
  • Process Musings
  • Sacred Graffiti
  • The Mind of a Stone
  • Markings
  • Najeeba’s World
  • Going God
  • Tiny Truths
  • Crashingly Beautiful
  • Synchronicity
  • hallelujah
  • The Painted Page
  • human voices
  • Zen Humanism
  • BikerBar
  • rooo
  • Shotaku
  • Reclusland Research Links
  • Kosmografias (English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish)
  • Carl Jung
  • Tsurezuregusa (German and English)
  • Cogenesis
  • silence and ink
  • mason_mem

Note: Volume—don’t assault my dash please—is a significant criterion for me, as is topic relevance; and, if I left you out it’s not because I don’t love you…I do! It’s quite possible I just forgot or you never post or you mostly reblog or you only post links or your Tumblr just self-imploded (e.g., crypte.tumblr.com) or any number of things.

Please do educate me on other Tumblrs not on this list or not in the following pane to the right here ➙

Moreover, these are mostly English-language blogs. Let’s get more linguistic diversity in this category too if we can. I will add Tumblrs as I become aware of them.

Thank you.

A clarification

dharmaarte replied to your link: Reference « on the precipice

Thanks for the list and for the mention, Katherine. And just a note in relation to us at D/A: we’re open to other traditions, as long as there are people willing to collaborate.

My pleasure D/A. I had you listed under “Vajrayana” because of your strong relationship with Chögyam Trungpa, but I also had you listed under Buddhist publications…To avoid confusion, I’ve modified on the big list to just the latter.

The way of mindfulness is, however, always appropriate to the time and the place, to the way things are in their good and bad aspects. Then suffering isn’t dependent on the world being good or bad, but on how willing we are to use wisdom in this present moment. The way out of suffering is now, in being able to see things as they are.

Ajahn Sumedho, (via It’s like this?: On inspiration)

Thanks Terry. Such a gem of a book, The Way It Is.
